Interior Wall finishes

Interior wall finishes : Design consideration

Any individual attempt to transform a house into a home needs an understanding of the rules of aesthetics. We will explain some of the interior wall finishes in order to satisfy the human need for beauty -which is an essential need, and those rules are simple and can be implemented without significant costs.

Decoration finishes:

Walls:

Walls are the largest area in the interior space. It also serves as the background for furniture. Walls help create the environment in which you thrive through the addition of colors, finishes and touch that can transform an ordinary space into another unique one.

Considerations to be taken into account when choosing interior wall finishes:

– When painting a room, it is important to tune it with other rooms of the house to achieve harmony.

– It is important to choose healthy and non-polluting wall finishes in order to preserve the indoor air quality. This subject will be mentioned in detail in another series of articles titled “Design considerations to satisfy functional human needs”.

– To harmonize with materials used for floors and ceilings.

– To be consistent with the furniture inside the house.

– To conceal any defects in the proportions and measurements of the house in general; especially walls.

– To fit the purpose of the room.

– To appropriate the lighting in the space.

Types of interior wall finishes:

Wall paint is the most common and simplest of finishes as it has many applications that provide different effects. Any treatments carried out manually reflect special appreciation for quality and uniqueness. We’ll talk about some of its applications:

Glazing: one of the richest wall finishes and its application requires the addition of one or more of the oily base coating layers in order to get a semitransparent surface, but the use of glaze is more preferable because it works without being dry for long period of time, thus helping to fix defects.

Water Color Washing: has the same quality of water colors and is often used to gain an old look for smooth wood surfaces. It is also used to improve the color of lining, or as a new form of painting used on walls.

Lacquering: gives walls a deep rich look. To apply it, the surface must be prepared well first in terms of the restoration of cracks. After that paint the wall with a primary coat, then it should be covered with six or more layers of satin or semi-shiny paint. Each layer should be left to dry first. If the final appearance is required to sparkle, it is essential that all layers should be shiny in addition to a final layer of transparent varnish.

Combing: a technique where the rubber comb is used to move over the outer layer of wet paint, in order to produce nice models on the wall. After drying of primary layer, we paint the final layer in a different color and comb linear or circular patterns.

Marbling: is giving the surface the nice cold effect of the rocks, by mixing colors on the wall and then painting fine broken lines with a brush to mimic different types of marble.

Stenciling: a design that adds to the beauty and details of the interior architecture by vicious models on paper and printing it over the final layer of paint in a different color. It is possible to add this technique to one of the other techniques to give a unique effect. Stencils exist in different designs for use, but I prefer choosing one of the furniture themes in order to gain harmony.

Optical illusion (Trompe l ‘oeil): the process where we paint the wall to illustrate it as a three-dimensional scene. That technology helps us to perceive the space as a wide one.

Mural: a type of painting to decorate a wall. Murals can be painted directly on the wall or on the canvas collage on the surface of the wall.

It is possible to use several techniques for coating the interior space to give a sense of diversity and uniqueness; with the existence of a common factor between them, harmony with furniture style and with the design as a whole. We will talk about choosing colors of the walls in the subsequent article.
